Yleisimmät phrasal verbit YO-kokeessa

Phrasal verbit ovat verbin ja partikkelin (preposition tai adverbin) yhdistelmiä, joiden merkitys ei aukea osista. Give up ei tarkoita "antaa ylös", vaan "luovuttaa". Opettele ne yksi kerrallaan esimerkkilauseen kanssa.

Up ja down

give up (luovuttaa): Do not give up before the deadline.
bring up (kasvattaa, ottaa puheeksi): She brought up an interesting point.
come up with (keksiä): He came up with a clever solution.
put up with (sietää): I cannot put up with the noise any longer.
look up (etsiä tietoa): Look up the word in a dictionary.
show up (saapua): Only half the guests showed up.
break down (rikkoutua, hajota): The car broke down on the motorway.
turn down (kieltäytyä, vähentää): She turned down the job offer.
settle down (asettua, rauhoittua): The class settled down quickly.

On ja off

carry on (jatkaa): Carry on with your work.
get on (tulla toimeen, edetä): How are you getting on at school?
go on (jatkua): The meeting went on for hours.
take off (lähteä, ottaa pois): The plane took off on time.
put off (lykätä): Do not put off your homework.
call off (peruuttaa): They called off the wedding.

In ja out

break out (puhjeta): A fire broke out in the kitchen.
find out (saada selville): I want to find out the truth.
point out (huomauttaa): The teacher pointed out the mistake.
carry out (suorittaa): The researchers carried out a study.
work out (selvittää, treenata, onnistua): Everything worked out in the end.
figure out (keksiä, ymmärtää): I cannot figure out the answer.
run out of (loppua): We have run out of milk.
look into (tutkia): The police are looking into the case.

With ja for ja after

get along with (tulla toimeen): I get along with my colleagues.
catch up with (saada kiinni): I need to catch up with the news.
deal with (käsitellä): How do you deal with stress?
look forward to (odottaa innolla): I look forward to seeing you.
look after (huolehtia): Could you look after my dog?

Sekalaiset

come across (kohdata, vaikuttaa joltakin): I came across an old photo.
let down (pettää): I do not want to let my parents down.
come up against (kohdata vastoinkäymisiä): She came up against strong opposition.

Yleisimmät virheet suomalaisille

Pronominin paikka erotettavissa phrasal-verbeissä: Erotettavissa phrasal-verbeissä pronomini menee verbin ja partikkelin VÄLIIN, ei perään.
Väärin: Look up it. / Pick up them.
Oikein: Look it up. / Pick them up.

Ylimääräinen prepositio: Give up, find out ja carry on eivät tarvitse to-prepositiota objektin eteen.
Väärin: I gave up to smoking. / I found out about the answer.
Oikein: I gave up smoking. / I found out the answer.

Sanasta sanaan -käännös: Phrasal verbiä ei voi yleensä päätellä osista.
Esimerkki: turn off ei tarkoita "kääntää pois", vaan "sammuttaa".
