Idiomit, jotka sopivat YO-esseeseen

Esseessä idiomi toimii vain, jos se istuu argumenttiin luonnollisesti. Älä yritä mahduttaa kolmea idiomia samaan kappaleeseen. Yksi tarkasti valittu ilmaus näyttää kielitaidon paremmin kuin viisi pakotettua.

Argumentointiin sopivat

Idiomit ahtaasti pakattuna: Yli kaksi idiomia samassa kappaleessa kuulostaa siltä, että kirjoittaja pyrkii vain näyttämään sanavarastoaan. Yksi tarkasti valittu riittää.

Idiomi virheellisessä muodossa: Idiomit on opittava sanasta sanaan. Pikkuvirhe muuttaa sen tunnistamattomaksi.
Väärin: We are on the same boat. / a vicious cycle.
Oikein: We are in the same boat. / a vicious circle.

Suomalaisen idiomin suora käännös: "Kantaa korsi kekoon" tai "ei sytytä" eivät käänny englanniksi sellaisenaan. Käytä englannin omia idiomeja.
