Mielipiteen ilmaisut esseessä: valmiit fraasit

"I think" toimii puheessa mutta tylsistää esseen. YO-arvioija odottaa monipuolisempaa kielenkäyttöä. Käytä näitä fraaseja vaihtelevasti, mutta valitse vahvuus aiheen mukaan: vahva väite vahvalla fraasilla, varovainen havainto varovaisella.

Oma mielipide selkeästi

in my view (mielestäni): In my view, the policy is misguided.
in my opinion (mielestäni): In my opinion, education must come first.
from my perspective (omasta näkökulmastani): From my perspective, the issue is complex.
I would argue that (väittäisin että): I would argue that change is overdue.
as far as I am concerned (omasta puolestani, mitä minuun tulee): As far as I am concerned, the matter is settled.
to my mind (mielestäni): To my mind, the solution is straightforward.

Vahva kanta

I firmly believe that (uskon vakaasti että): I firmly believe that education changes lives.
I am convinced that (olen vakuuttunut että): I am convinced that the data is reliable.
without a doubt (epäilemättä): Without a doubt, this is the best option.
there is no denying that (ei voi kiistää että): There is no denying that the cost is high.
it is undeniable that (ei voi kiistää että): It is undeniable that social media shapes opinions.

Varovainen kanta

it seems to me that (minusta tuntuu että): It seems to me that the trend will continue.
it appears that (näyttää siltä että): It appears that the policy has failed.
it would seem that (näyttäisi siltä että): It would seem that more research is needed.
it could be argued that (voitaisiin väittää että): It could be argued that the rules are too strict.
one might argue that (joku voisi väittää että): One might argue that progress has been slow.
there is some evidence to suggest that (on viitteitä siitä että): There is some evidence to suggest that the link is causal.

Yleisen näkemyksen referointi

Yhteenveto ja tasapaino

on balance (kaiken kaikkiaan): On balance, the reform should go ahead.
weighing up the arguments (vertailtuani argumentteja): Weighing up the arguments, I support the proposal.
having considered both sides (kun olen pohtinut molempia puolia): Having considered both sides, I lean towards reform.
all things considered (kaikki huomioiden): All things considered, the policy has worked.
in the final analysis (loppuanalyysissä): In the final analysis, the benefits outweigh the costs.
to conclude (lopuksi): To conclude, the issue deserves urgent attention.

Yleisimmät virheet suomalaisille

Tuplailmaisu: Älä yhdistä kahta mielipidefraasia samaan virkkeeseen. Se kuulostaa epävarmalta.
Väärin: In my opinion, I think that the policy should change.
Oikein: In my opinion, the policy should change. tai I think the policy should change.

Sama fraasi joka kappaleessa: Älä aloita kaikkia kappaleita in my view -ilmauksella. Vaihtele neljän tai viiden fraasin välillä.

Liian vahva fraasi pieneen väitteeseen: It is undeniable that vaatii kiistämättömän faktan, ei makuasiaa.
Väärin: It is undeniable that pizza is the best food.
Oikein: In my opinion, pizza is the best food.

I personally think: I think sisältää jo persoonan, joten personally on turhaa täytettä.
Väärin: I personally think that...
Oikein: I think that...
